UPM Delivers 3000kgs Production per hour for Pinnacle Foods
 
Berkshire based UPM Conveyors recently carried out a challenging system update for the brand Pinnacle Foods, a specialist in the meat and poultry processing industry.
 
Roy Fowler’s experienced team were responsible for operating a project to deliver 3000kgs per hour on a 24/7 basis for the busy food company to meet growing demand. The expansion and improvement of the conveyor facilities followed a move to a new purpose built, 30,000 square foot factory in Alton.
 
Partnered with top companies across the food industry, including food services, frozen food wholesalers, retailers and manufacturers, it was essential for Pinnacle Foods to have an efficient conveyor system in place to deliver on contracts and maintain their workflow in a safe and steady manner.
 
Graham Reed, Managing Director of Pinnacle Foods, selected UPM Conveyors to design the complete product handling system with UPM accepting total responsibility for the complete turnkey project. This involved the handling of meat and poultry from goods in through to band saws (including inspection and sieving); dicers, flakers, mincers, undersize screening to an octofrost freezer tunnel and finally a multi head weigher/bagger and packing/dispatch. The resulting output of of which is three tons per hour on a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation.
 
All aspects of manufacture were carried out in-house at UPM, including fabrication programming and control build based on a central PLC touch screen to interface all belt conveyors to the Multihead Weigher. As a result of this method, any problem that might arise can be managed through diverting the implicated product.
 
The meats conveyed by Pinnacle Foods into free flow IQF mince and diced pork, lamb, beef, chicken and turkey, as well as chops and joints. Formed in 2007 following the merger of Wilson’s Frosted Meats and Pinnacle Meats, it has developed into an industry leader in providing quality frozen and fresh meat and poultry. using contemporary techniques whilst maintaining sought after traditional values.
 
Roy Fowler of UPM states, “To date this has been one of the more challenging projects for our team and as a result, also one of the most rewarding. Several of our skill sets were applied and after ongoing consultation with the directors and staff at Pinnacle Foods, we were able to create a bespoke solution for their thriving business.
 
We expect the conveyor system to serve the team well over many years. Choosing to update after their move to a new location was beneficial to our work as it allowed us the scope to design an efficient and pragmatic system for their current and future needs”.
 
The project is a larger example of the ongoing work carried out by family-run UPM Conveyors throughout the UK, including delivering a turnaround of 200 tonnes of yoghurt for Tim’s Dairy during their own recent expansion.
