SONY: Can GigE Vision deliver on its promise?
GigE Vision is, in theory, a highly attractive option as a bus standard for implementing machine vision systems. It offers high specifications for data rate and interconnection length, promises interoperability between vendors, and is based on a familiar, mainstream technology with all the concomitant advantages of economies of scale and ubiquity of deployment.

However, GigE Vision is also a relatively young standard that is yet to be proven in the broad range of machine vision applications.

Sony’s Image Sensing Solutions division, in conjunction with the Institute of Photonic Microsystems (IPMS) of the Fraunhofer Institute, undertook a study, seeking to objectively compare the specifications and performance of GigE Vision, with that of the most-common current machine vision interconnection standard, IIDC (Instrumentation and Industrial Digital Camera) over IEEE 1394.

This whitepaper outlines the methodology and key results of that research.

Cognex UK Ltd: Sony benefits from accurate code reading system
New MP3 players from a global electronics manufacturer like Sony are destined for a demanding consumer market and cannot be compromised in any way. In Malaysia, the company sought a code reading and traceability solution for the PCBs for these MP3 players. This kind of product tracking is essential allowing a company like Sony to protect itself against costly recalls and product mix-ups as well as allowing for “damage control” in the event of a problem. Previously, badly read codes and the resulting rejection rates were very costly in re-work and rejected units. Their old code reading system having proved incapable of rising to the challenge, Sony is now using the In-Sight® 5110 for code reading on PCBs destined for their new MP3 players.

Scorpion Vision will be demonstrating the new 3D stereo vision system at stand 2417 at the UK's IPOT show taking place at the NEC on the 13th and 14th February 2008.
This is a software based 3D vision solution that utilises two cameras which work together in the same way that a human uses two eyes. The images of the subject are taken from two different angles, Scorpion is able to create a third image which is a combination of the two, with the perspective removed. Thus, the image appears to be a top down view of the subject. The 3D vision algorithms can then extrapolate the vertical distance from the subject, whereas with 2D Vision only the X and Y components were ever possible.
The 3D module is simply a software add-on. And it works.

The ALTAIR Li uses an IR camera which provides thermal images of the area under investigation at fast frame rate. Using proprietary software these thermal images are converted into full field stress images, without any contact with the material surface. The full field stress images are produced in real time by using the thermoelastic effect which states there is a linear relationship between the temperature changes induced by loading and the stress at the material surface.
