FLIR Infrared cameras now ‘talk to Extech Meters’ ….Another first from FLIR
FLIR owns EXTECH, the manufacturer of test and measurement instruments. And now it has launched Meterlink™, an industry-first wireless connection between the two so that meters can ‘talk to’ cameras. This means those involved in electrical and building inspection will be able to work quicker, easier and more intelligently than ever before.

Meterlink makes it possible to transfer, via Bluetooth™, the data acquired by an EXTECH instrument to the infrared camera and instantly embed it on an infrared image for accurate, co-ordinated documentation
For example, during infrared inspection of electrics, users can transmit key readings such as current or voltage from a Meterlink-enabled EXTECH clamp meter directly to the FLIR infrared camera. It brings more intelligence to inspection as typically it is now possible to establish a relationship between heat and load.

UWE Bristol software sniffs out criminals by the shape of their nose
Forget iris and fingerprint scans – scanning noses could be a quicker and easier way to verify a person's identity, according to scientists from the University of the West of England and University of Bath.

Professor Melvyn Smith led the team at the University of the West of England who developed the PhotoFace system.
“The technique is known as photometric stereo and UWE's Machine Vision Laboratory are one of only three UK centres with expertise in this area. The software then works out the colour, surface orientation and depth of each point on the face by analysing the shading within each of the photos.”

FLIR: Free online Infrared Image Analysis
A nifty new facility on the FLIR website enables users to evaluate infrared images online. So even without dedicated camera software, visitors can upload an image for analysis. It’s intuitive, easy-to-use and absolutely free.

The FLIR WebViewer also allows measurement tools to be created, moved and deleted. Users can change colour palettes, access details of camera properties and choose the most appropriate temperature measurement scale.

Adjusted images can then be saved to the pc for attachment to an email or incorporation into a report. The online tool provides five image examples with which the user can experiment – a volcano, heating pipes, a power line, a row of parked cars and a building interior.

Alrad Imaging: Dual resolution contact image sensors
Contact Image Sensors or CIS modules are used in a variety of imaging applications. The more common applications are fax machines, copiers and document readers. However, CIS modules are now being used in many applications including bar code readers, position sensors and vending machines to name just a few. Resolution is important in all these applications and with two new sensors you can change resolution on the fly. CMOS Sensor has produced two image sensors with selectable resolution for use in CIS modules. The C116 is selectable between 300 and 600 dpi while the C118 is selectable between 200 and 400 dpi. Now you can double your system resolution at the flip of a switch.
